BRANTFORD, ON – The City of Brantford is seeking public feedback to help update the previous Corporate and Community Climate Change Action Plans and merge them into one Climate Change Action Plan for Brantford. Originally approved by City Council following the declaration of a climate emergency in 2019, the goal of the new Plan is to further guide the community toward achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Community input plays an important role in helping shape the actions and priorities moving forward.

“Updating the City’s Climate Change Action Plans is a critical step in ensuring Brantford remains resilient in the face of a changing climate,” says Rebecca Szczepanowski, Supervisor, Policy and Sustainability, City of Brantford. “We’re asking members of the community to share their ideas, priorities and perspectives so that we can ensure this updated Plan continues to reflect the values and needs of our community.”

Community members are invited to provide feedback on the proposed measures to be included in the Brantford Climate Action Plan through an online survey at LetsTalkBrantford.ca/ClimateAction. Participants who complete the survey will also be entered into a draw to win one of the following prizes:

  • $50 gift card for a Pela compostable iPhone case
  • $50 gift card to R&M Walgraeve Garden Centre
  • $50 gift card to Healthy Rabbit

Entrants must be a resident of, or own a business, in Brantford and prizes must be picked up at Brantford City Hall, 58 Dalhousie St, with photo identification. The survey will be open for feedback until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2025.

Opportunities for in-person feedback will also be made available at various City facilities and events throughout the feedback period and survey responses will be collected during the Canada Day event on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at Lions Park Steve Brown Sports Complex.

Since 2022, the City of Brantford has made significant strides towards reducing its carbon footprint by implementing actions outlined in the Climate Change Action Plans, including:

  • Converting streetlights to LED
  • Developing a Net-Zero Building Standard for all new municipally owned buildings
  • Completing a Transit Optimization Study
  • Implementing a green bin program
  • Growing Brantford’s tree canopy
  • Planning for City buildings and vehicles to be low or zero carbon

In 2024, Brantford also achieved all five milestones of the Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) Milestone Framework, which identifies and celebrates efforts that cities undertake to reduce their carbon footprints and promote environmental sustainability corporately and as a community. Out of more than 500 participating municipalities across Canada, Brantford stands among only 75 other cities that have achieved all five milestones for their Corporate and Community streams and is recognized for their leadership in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
