City offers free Virtual Workshop Series

BRANTFORD, ON – The City of Brantford has partnered with the Brant Elder Abuse Awareness Committee, the Community Legal Clinic of Brant Haldimand Norfolk, Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario, and Victim Services of Brant to offer a free virtual workshop series to support older adults in planning for their future. From April 29 to June 23, 2021, participants are invited to learn more about Power of Attorney (POA), Wills, Tenants’ Rights, Self-Advocacy and more from the safety of their home during the Planning for the Future: Free Healthy Aging Workshop Series.

“I’m very proud we’re able to offer this free informative workshop series as part of the ongoing efforts from the City of Brantford to support seniors to age actively, live safely, enjoy good health and stay involved in the community,” says Councillor Richard Carpenter, Chair of the Brant Elder Abuse Awareness Committee.  

The series covers different topics including the benefits and use of a Power of Attorney, how to look for and identify instances of elder abuse, tips to strengthen and develop self-advocacy skills and ways to lessen the risks of financial abuse. All workshops can be joined virtually using Zoom or by phone. Pre-registration is required and links or a phone number will be supplied upon registration. Planning for the Future: Healthy Aging Workshop Series

Self-Advocacy

  • Thursday, April 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
  • Wednesday, June 9 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

There are many times in our lives where we find ourselves needing to use our voice to advocate for ourselves or others, whether with a utility company or a government program. In this workshop we will review some key ways to strengthen our voice.

Power of Attorney (POA) Workshop

  • Tuesday, May 4 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
  • Saturday, June 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

It is important to ensure that your financial and heath rights are protected, and POA’s are one way we can make our wishes and needs known with people in our lives. Join this workshop to learn more about how you can protect yourself with these simple to do documents.

Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario

  • Tuesday, May 4 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
  • Wednesday, June 23 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

This session will cover the essentials in understanding and identifying Elder Abuse and Ageism in our community. This session will also include information about Power of Attorney and navigating community resources.

Wills Workshop

  • Wednesday, May 12 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, June 8 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

The passing of people close to us is a challenging and difficult time. Wills allow us to guide our loved ones through our final wishes. Learn more about how to create a will that reflects your needs.

Victim Services Presentation

  • Wednesday, May 19 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Responding to Elder Abuse

  • Wednesday, June 16 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Join Penny McVicar from Victim Services as she talks about Elder abuse, local resources and steps to take when responding to Elder Abuse.

Power of Attorney Resources and Guides

  • Saturday, May 22 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
  • Wednesday, June 23 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

The Brantford and surround community is full of resources but we do not always know where or how to reach out for support or assistance. In this workshop we will explore what is available in the community, and how to connect to services.

Tenants’ Rights

  • Tuesday, May 25 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, June 15 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

As a tenant you have both rights and responsibilities, as does your landlord. In this workshop we will review some common myths about being a tenant.
Prioritizing seniors' health and wellness is a key component of the City's Healthy Aging Plan and Elder Abuse Prevention Strategy. Citizens are living longer, healthier lives and as a result, age-friendly programming aims to ensure people of all ages and abilities have opportunities to thrive. The City of Brantford is internationally recognized by the World Health Organization as an Age-Friendly community. In addition, the Ministry of Seniors Affairs recognized the City with the Ontario Age-Friendly Community Recognition Award in 2018.
