City recognizes school crossing guards at Strawberry Social

BRANTFORD, ON – The City of Brantford hosted a Strawberry Social on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at the Brantford and District Civic Centre, to honour Adult School Crossing Guards and formally announce that the administration of the program is transitioning from the Brantford Police Service to the City in September 2025. 

“School Crossing Guards play a vital role in ensuring that families and children travel to and from school safely throughout Brantford,” says Brantford Mayor Kevin Davis. “That is why the City is pleased to be managing this incredibly important program for the community.”

Brantford’s Adult School Crossing Guard’s assist Brantford’s youth in crossing busy intersections before and after school. There are 65 full and part-time guards assigned, twice daily, to 60 locations throughout the City of Brantford.

The event included an award ceremony to recognize crossing guards for their years of service, including:

  • Brenda Patten – 25 Years of Service
  • Rick Johnston – 15 Years of Service
  • Randall Mills – 15 Years of Service
  • Susan Hanratty – 10 Years of Service
  • Kevin Wills – 10 Years of Service
  • Joe Wilson – 10 Years of Service
  • Jim Crow – 10 Years of Service
  • Janice McQueen – 10 Years of Service
  • Lori Grundy – 5 Years of Service
  • John Maskell – 5 Years of Service
  • Gordon McCaughen – 5 Years of Service
  • Cheryl Miller – 5 Years of Service

The City of Brantford will be recruiting for Adult School Crossing Guards this summer. Crossing guards work approximately two hours per day and have the opportunity to get involved in the community.
