BRANTFORD, ON: With over 1,700 households on the community housing waitlist, whereby senior and  non-senior applicants with no dependents make up 69 per cent of the list, the need for more affordable housing in our community has never been more urgent.

On Tuesday February 9, 2021 the City’s Committee of the Whole-Community Development (COW-CD), will consider a staff report seeking direction to pursue approvals and funding for a proposed new 25 unit modular affordable housing development on City owned land at 177 Colborne Street West, Brantford.

The proposed concept including 25 studio units (5 units per floor), with a main level dedicated to commercial space, is part of the City’s Municipal Housing Master Plan goal of creating 506 more units by 2030, and the Mayors’ Housing Partnership Task Force mandate. The proposed units will address the dire need for more affordable housing options for older adults. The 327 square feet studio units will be suitable for single persons without dependents and will provide affordable rent for those who may be on fixed incomes such as Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP), or a senior’s pension.

City staff propose that the surrounding neighbourhood have a significant role in determining the end uses for the commercial space associated with this development, through a comprehensive neighbourhood consultation campaign including a neighbourhood planning meeting where concept drawings of the development will be shared and possible uses for the commercial space will be discussed. Additional opportunities to provide input will also be provided as part of any required change in zoning  or other processes related to the development.

Expanding our community’s supply of affordable housing is absolutely critical to offsetting current higher rent costs and decreasing the number of older individuals experiencing homelessness.
