Fifth Ave Pumping Station – Project Update

The City of Brantford recognizes that water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure is essential for sustaining and growing the city. Brantford’s first Master Servicing Plan (MSP) for these services was developed and approved by City Council in 2014. An update to the plan is in progress now to address the City’s growth needs until 2041. In the course of work on implementing and updating the MSP, the City identified capacity limitations in the City’s network of wastewater pumping stations.

In 2018 Brantford City Council approved the development of a comprehensive set of recommendations to address the allocation of servicing capacity and station limitations including:

  1. Maintaining and repairing the wastewater pumping stations
  2. Improving performance
  3. Upgrades to meet future capacity needs
  4. Short-term interim solutions for the Empey and Fifth Avenue Pumping stations
  5. Updating the 2019-2027 Capital budget to reflect the study findings
  6. Development of an Allocation Tool to track capacity
  7. Development of a Wastewater Allocation Policy and By-law based framework, informed by stakeholder consultation

Informed by a public consultation process in November 2018, the City’s Wastewater Allocation Policy was implemented in December 2018.

Furthermore, we are pleased to advise that the Fifth Avenue Pumping station rehabilitation project is on track to be completed in two phases as follows:

PHASE 1 - Pumping Station Upgrades

  1. The detailed Design Phase will be completed by the end of March, 2020
  2. The contractor Tender Period/process will take place from May through June 2020
  3. The award for the contract will be issued in July 2020
  4. Construction is anticipated to begin in August 2020
  5. Contract Completion is expected by May 2021

Due to various minor issues and unforeseen events, such as the COVID 19 pandemic, the anticipated Substantial Completion of the Fifth Avenue Wastewater Pumping Station (WWPS) is Summer 2021.
