Fireworks safety tips for Brantford residents

BRANTFORD, ON – With the Canada Day long weekend approaching, the City of Brantford and the Brantford Fire Department remind residents to be safe with the use, handling, and disposal of fireworks.

The use of fireworks are only permitted on private property on Canada Day and Victoria Day or on the three calendar days leading up to both holidays. Fireworks are not to be ignited on public property, including parks and open fields/spaces in the City of Brantford.

“If you choose to have family fireworks, make sure you have purchased your fireworks from a reliable vendor, have a water source handy and ensure that there is always an adult present when handling the fireworks,” says Dwayne Armstrong, Chief Fire Prevention Officer, Brantford Fire Department. “We want everyone to have a safe and fun Canada Day weekend and so it’s important that all safety conditions are followed.”

The use of personal fireworks are only permissible if they meet the following conditions:

  • Displayed on Victoria Day and Canada Day, or the three days prior to both holidays.
  • Discharged between sunset and 11 p.m.
  • Set off on private property by the property owner or have written permission by the landowner for others to do so.
  • Fallout or debris must be contained to property of the individual discharging them or land that they have prior written permission from the landowner to do so.
  • Handled only by individuals 18 years of age or older.
  • Set off in a safe manner so that discharge or debris only falls on the landowner’s property.
  • Discharged when the weather is appropriate to do so.
  • All debris, casings, or still burning fireworks must immediately be extinguished after they have been set off to avoid a fire.

If you plan to display fireworks during the upcoming Canada Day holiday, please adhere to the above and practice the following fireworks safety tips:

  • Carefully read and follow all instructions.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher, hose, or bucket of water on hand in case of fire.
  • Discharge fireworks in a safe area free of combustible materials such as trees, buildings, and dry grass.
  • Ensure onlookers keep a safe distance from the area where the fireworks are being discharged.

Residents are also reminded to continue to adhere to the public health measures in place to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. As per the province’s current restrictions, outdoor gatherings are limited to 10 people with physical distancing in place.
