BRANTFORD, ON: Last fall, the City of Brantford together with members of the community celebrated the Grand Opening of Brantford’s new City Hall at 58 Dalhousie Street in downtown Brantford. The centralized location now houses City staff who previously occupied six decentralized corporate administrative facilities including 100 Wellington Square, 84 Market St., 1 Market Square, 180 Greenwich St., 1-3 Sherwood Drive, and 399 Wayne Gretzky Parkway. As a result of the consolidation, a savings of $21.57 million in the City’s 10-year Capital Plan will be realized in addition to $1.12 million in annual operating budget savings. Another key benefit of consolidating services is that the City can now offer citizens a one-stop access point for all services making it more convenient to access the City’s 200 plus programs and services.

Clock restored to working order

During the City Hall reconstruction project, the iconic clock at the top of the building was inspected and at the time did not pose an immediate risk to public safety, however a more recent inspection identified several pieces of acrylic and glass in the clock dials had cracked, and some have already fallen off and broken away. To ensure public safety, restoration work was completed to prevent the larger pieces falling to the ground. While completing this work, the clock mechanisms were modernized to working order through replacement of the clock faces, clock hands, panes and caulking.

“This is such an iconic focal point of the City’s downtown and an important part of our history,” said Mayor Davis. “I’m so pleased that the clock has been restored to safe working order and is reliably telling the time again. I’ve heard from so many in our community that are proud of the restorative work that’s been done to the new City Hall building and the fact that its legacy of public service will continue for another hundred years.”

Tower Bell

With restoration of the original Tower Bell expected to be completed in spring 2023, the City plans to facilitate a public engagement campaign in January 2023 whereby residents and businesses will be asked to weigh in on when/how often the bell should chime. Public input will be important to informing a plan for when the bell rings out.

Brantford’s City Hall was built between 1913 and 1915, when the building was originally constructed as a federal post office.
