City of Brantford awarded grant to take action on climate change and resilience

Brantford, ON – The City of Brantford has been granted $125,000 in funding from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ (FCM) Climate Change Staff Grants initiative to help address staffing gaps and to increase our capacity to adapt to the effects of climate change and reduce greenhouse (GHG) emissions.

Brantford is among 59 communities across Canada benefitting from this initiative.

The City of Brantford will use the funding to dedicate staff to activities such as developing greenhouse gas emissions reduction plans, creating GHG inventories and adding climate change practices into daily municipal processes.

The Climate Change Officer will also develop and implement the municipality’s Climate Adaptation Plan, as well as contributing to the development and implementation of municipal operational and instructional changes that will lead to operational savings and reduced vulnerability to climate change impacts.

The City is currently recruiting for this position that is expected to be in place by mid-March.

The Climate Change Staff Grants are offered through the Municipalities for Climate Innovation Program (MCIP) delivered by FCM and funded by the Government of Canada.

“I want to thank FCM and the Government of Canada for supporting Brantford’s ongoing efforts to develop and implement climate change strategies that will reduce our carbon footprint and mitigate the negative consequences of climate change at a local level”, said Chief Administrative Officer, Darryl Lee.

“I also want to take this opportunity to acknowledge the City’s Environmental Policy Advisory Committee (EPAC) for their significant contribution to helping secure this much needed funding for our community”, Lee added. “We know the City will benefit greatly from having a resource dedicated to the development of policies and plans to address climate change impacts and further reduce GHG emissions in our community.”
