City of Brantford seeks input on Community Safety Zones

BRANTFORD, ON – The City is looking for suggestions to help determine potential locations for Community Safety Zones in Brantford. Community Safety Zones are sections of roadway where public safety is of special concern and where higher collision patterns or vehicle speeds have been identified. These zones may include roadways near schools, daycare centres, playgrounds, parks, hospitals and assisted living residences. While the rules of the road remain the same within each designated zone, the penalties for violations are increased. Under the Highway Traffic Act, many set fines are doubled such as speeding and traffic signal-related offences.

In an effort to establish the community’s desire for Community Safety Zones and to determine the capacity for enforcement, residents are asked to visit LetsTalkBrantford.ca/CSZ to share ideas for the potential locations of these zones by November 17, 2021.

“Like many other municipalities, Brantford continues to see the dangerous effects of speeding on City roadways,” says David Ferguson, Manager of Traffic Services, City of Brantford. “Implementing tools at the City’s disposal to improve safety is an important step in preventing accidents and injuries.”

As a Vision Zero city, Brantford aims to make streets safer through improved education, enforcement, engineering, evaluation and engagement. Brantford City Council adopted the Vision Zero Road Safety Strategic Plan on April 27, 2021. In July 2018, Brantford City Council first passed a motion to adopt Vision Zero Road Safety to set the simple and clear goal of zero fatalities or serious injuries on city roadways. The City’s Vision Zero Road Safety Committee encourages people to drive in a safe and responsible manner to prevent fatalities or serious injuries caused by speeding or aggressive driving.
