Financial Assistance for funeral expenses

If you are on the Ontario Disability Support Program or have a very low family income, you may be able to get financial help for funeral expenses.

Funerals and burials

Eligible low-income Brantford and Brant County residents, and residents receiving Social Assistance benefits, can get help with the cost of funerals, cremations and burials.

Who may be eligible for assistance

  • Ontario Works Participants
  • Ontario Disability Support Program recipients
  • People with low incomes who have earnings such as:
    • Wages
    • Employment Insurance
    • WSIB
    • OSAP
    • CPP
    • OAS
    • GAINS and other types of pensions

Eligibility is determined on the deceased person's income and assets, not the family member who is making the application.

Requesting financial assistance

Applicants can request financial assistance with:

  • Removal from place of death and basic care of the deceased
  • Professional arrangements to conduct and attend the funeral in a funeral home or at a place of worship
  • Newspaper notice
  • All applicable documentation, certificates, service charges and taxes
  • Cremation or burial, including plot and interment

The City of Brantford and Brant County Funeral homes and cemeteries maintain an approved rate schedule that supports a basic, yet professional, service. Your funeral director can provide more information.
